By Roope Rainisto · 500 works · released 2023-02-08
Life In West America is a 500-piece series of AI-generated 'post-photographs' that imagine a fever-dream version of the American West, centered on individuals and small, intimate moments rather than grand vistas. Rainisto approached the AI as a 'virtual camera', staging the work like a photo shoot, but chose to keep the slight wrongness and deviations of the outputs rather than chase pure photorealism, so scenes feel at once familiar and alien. The imagined America draws on mid-century color photography and on outsider fantasies of the country, with Rainisto citing Lars von Trier's imagined America and Robert Frank's photobook The Americans as touchstones. Each of the 500 works carries its own title and narrative and was produced at 4K resolution. The collection sold out almost immediately on release.
