The Paris collective Obvious chained two kinds of algorithm: a text-generation model writes a dream, and a text-to-image model then visualizes it. Each piece is therefore a small record of algorithmic creativity at two removes, an invented narrative that the machine itself interprets visually. The project marked a shift for Obvious from the GAN portraiture that made them famous to the language-driven image models that emerged in 2021.
