Obvious is a French collective founded in Paris in 2017 by Hugo Caselles-Dupré, Pierre Fautrel, and Gauthier Vernier, who work between academic AI research and art. Their 'Portrait of Edmond de Belamy' (2018) was made with a GAN trained on 15,000 portraits painted between the 14th and 20th centuries. In October 2018 it became the first AI-generated artwork sold at a major auction house, fetching $432,500 at Christie's New York against an estimate of $7,000-10,000. Later series include Electric Dreams of Ukiyo, a series of African masks (2020), the solo show '7.1' (2022), and video works for the Paris Opera's first NFT collection (2023).
