Chimerical StoriesBy Entangled Others (Sofia Crespo & Feileacan McCormick) · 513 works · released 2022-05-03Chimerical Stories crosses the familiar three-stage life cycle of the butterfly with the many-staged life cycles of jellyfish, imagining hybrid aquatic organisms whose transformations have no images of their own. Entangled Others built the specimens with generative adversarial networks, splicing the upper layers of one network onto the lower layers of another so that the latent spaces of different species and habitats crossbreed. Custom code then pulled out gene-like traits such as form, color, coherence, and habitat and recombined them into each creature. The 513 specimens, presented as both stills and animations, are sorted into three developmental stages: Gelatinous Beginning (Ethereal), Metamorphic Vessel (Engulfed), and Emergent Finale (Expanded). Traits record colour, mutation degree, ocean depth zone from Epipelagic to Hadalpelagic, and chance of encounter.
