podGANs continues bitGANs, Pindar Van Arman's narrative AI project about strange creatures that the artist says simply began emerging from his GPUs. The images come from generative adversarial networks (GANs) trained on hundreds of thousands of custom 8-bit images. Many of those images draw on games from the artist's childhood, such as Mario Bros and Space Invaders, and the networks turn that low-resolution source material into high-resolution portraits. The 1,024-piece podGANs series appeared on BrainDrops' launch day. Like the earlier bitGANs releases, it treats the creatures as a mystery for collectors to piece together.
