Confluence brings together three kinds of authorship: the artist's analog sketchbook, a neural generative model trained on its pages, and digital re-rendering. Devi Parikh's physical sketchbook held doodles, paper cuttings, mandalas, and zentangles, often with short handwritten notes. A model trained on that material produced new compositions, which were then rendered in a range of color palettes and interpreted in turn by a second AI model. The series reflects ideas Parikh had pursued as a researcher. In a 2020 study she co-authored, she proposed 'neuro-symbolic generative art', which trains a neural network on artwork produced by an artist-defined algorithm. Human raters in the study judged both the results and the process as more creative than the purely algorithmic approach.
